Super Rugby Aotearoa round 3 review

Crusaders vs Chiefs

Played out in miserable conditions, the game between the quality Crusaders and the struggling Chiefs was sure to be a tense and close affair at the Orangetheory Stadium in Christchurch.

The away side started positively, with a strong defensive line testing the Crusaders attack early on. The Chiefs reclaimed the ball soon after and showed a high quality attack of their own, especially through forwards Naitoa Ah Khoi and Pita Sowakula.

The Crusaders didn’t start well, conceding lots of penalties and making many handling errors but some quick thinking by Sevu Reece saw Will Jordan steam in just before the break. 10-3 at HT

Another opportunistic try was scored early on in the second half by Crusaders fullback Will Jordan, who called for a quick throw in from Reece and sprinted to the line- catching the Chiefs sleeping. 15-3

The away side had more to bring though, as Sean Wainui scored from close range in the 64th minute, followed by two Damian McKenzie kicks. FT 18-13

It was a tight and tense affair in Christchurch, as the Chiefs showed some periods of quality especially at the start. However, they didn’t have enough to beat the Crusaders incredible home record- they haven’t lost in Christchurch since 2016!
