Highlanders to win by 3 over the Crusaders
Chiefs to win by 7 over the Hurricanes
Unfortunately, both predictions were incorrect, as the Crusaders showed why they are the reigning Champions with a resounding win over the Highlanders. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes picked up their first win of the tournament as they beat the lacklustre Chiefs in Hamilton. My reviews of both games and team of the week can be found below, enjoy 🙂
Highlanders vs Crusaders
It was due to be a close tie in Dunedin, and the game lived up to expectations as high levels of pace and energy were shown by both sides- with the Crusaders having more possession at the start but the Highlanders defence holding strong.
Richie Mo’unga slotted a penalty in the 10th minute- 0-3, and five minutes later ace winger Will Jordan scored to take the scores to 0-8. The home side responded well though, with a good attacking period finished off with a try from back row Shannon Frizell- 7-8. Shortly after, an Aaron Smith break ended with winger Ngane Punivai scoring in the corner- 14-8.
Penalties were exchanged between Mo’unga and Mitchell Hunt before the break, where the scores stood at 17-14- the home side leading the Champions.
After half time the Crusaders started well, but they were repelled by the incredible ‘Landers defence. This only lasted so long though, as flanker Tom Christie got a try in the 50th minute. 17-21.
Another Hunt penalty brought the home side within a point, but the Crusaders stamina showed as they scored several further tries within the final half an hour.
First, replacement wing Sevu Reece scored a great finish in the corner, then Christie scored a second before Will Jordan got another in the closing minutes with a brilliant 70m chip and chase. Highlanders 20-40 Crusaders
The Highlanders gave the away side a good game in the first 55 minutes, showing strong character and defence as well as some great tries. However, the power and pace of the Crusaders won them the match, as they extended the scoreline towards the end of the game.
