Super Rugby Aotearoa round 4 review

Chiefs vs Hurricanes

It was a bottom of the table clash as the struggling Chiefs took on the even more desperate Hurricanes in Hamilton- both teams still without a win in the first few weeks of the competition.

The Hurricanes struck first, with a long Jordie Barrett pass finding wing Kobus van Wyk for the try in the corner. 0-7.

A Damian McKenzie penalty followed, but there was little action in the next ten minutes as both teams conceded lots of penalties and squandered chances. However, Barrett slotted another penalty late on and the ‘Canes even got another try, as flanker Du’plessis Kirifi charged over following an intercept by Dane Coles and good runs by Ardie Savea and Ben Lam. 3-20 at the break.

After half time, McKenzie slotted another penalty to take the scores to 6-20 and ‘Canes lock Scott Scrafton was yellow-carded following repeated infringements. They didn’t let this affect them though, as van Wyk got a second try off a wonderful Barrett flick in the 61st minute.

The Chiefs had more to give, as they claimed a penalty try in the 64th minute and saw Scrafton given a second yellow as he illegally stopped the try from being scored. 13-25.

The home side used their man advantage as they then had a strong attacking period, ending in flanker Lachlan Boshier scoring- the end scores being Chiefs 18-25 Hurricanes

It was a tight contest in Hamilton, with the Hurricanes edging the home side with some great tries and an injection of energy from Barrett. The Chiefs head into the bye 0-4, with some serious work to do.
