Super Rugby Aotearoa round 5 review

Hurricanes vs Highlanders

The other match of the weekend saw the two middling sides face off at Sky Stadium, Wellington. It was an odd start to the game, as both sides thought they had scored- only to be ruled out by the TMO for obstructions. However, ‘Canes 9 TJ Perenara was not fazed by this opening disappointment as he scored through a clever dummy in the 28th minute. Fly-half Fletcher Smith got the conversion- 7-0.

Shortly after, an impressive attacking spell by the ‘Canes saw Jordie Barrett come flying through the Highlanders’ defensive line- only to throw a long pass to wing Kobus van Wyk who danced round the covering defenders to score in the corner (36′). HT 12-0.

The impressive home side came flying out of the blocks in the second half as well, with debutant flanker Devan Flanders crashing over from short range. 17-0.

A penalty was added by ‘Landers 10 Mitch Hunt and the away side showed fight as scrum half Aaron Smith received a pop ball from hooker Ash Dixon to score in the corner. This classy move by the co-captains saw the Highlanders decrease the deficit- 17-8. Another penalty by Hunt saw their scoreline increase by three points but it was too late for the away team. FT Hurricanes 17-11 Highlanders.

The Hurricanes seem to have improved in recent weeks, with the additions of Jordie Barrett and Kobus van Wyk, whilst the Highlanders are still struggling to win games- despite being very competitive. Both sides will likely be fighting for third place and this is set to be an gripping contest.
